Shamrocks Score 50 Points in Impressive First Half
PROSPECT, Ky. – No. 1 Trinity shot 75 percent (21-of-28) in the first half en route to a 50-34 lead and rolled to an 82-59 win over North Oldham.
The win gave Mike Szabo his 200th victory as head coach of the Shamrocks.
Szabo is now 200-99 in his 11 seasons at Trinity and 312-144 in his 18 seasons as a head coach overall. Szabo has not only built the Trinity Basketball program into one of the premier program’s in the state of Kentucky, but Szabo has established himself as one of the elite coaches in the history of the state of Kentucky. As one of just ten coaches to claim the Louisville Courier-Journal’s Statewide Coach of the Year award twice and just the second from Louisville, Szabo’s ability to change the culture of programs has resulted in Trinity being a consensus preseason number one in the state of Kentucky for the 2011-12 season.
The Shamrocks came out hot early, jumping to a 12-1 lead in the first 3:25 of the game. Trinity extended the lead to 20-6 with another run of 8-2. In taking the 20-6 lead, the Shamrocks hit their first four three-point field goal attempts.
Trinity opened up a 31-15 lead with 7:33 left in the second quarter after a Foster basket before the Mustangs went on a 14-4 run. Trinity went 3:08 without a made field goal during the North Oldham run. Trinity’s trademark pressure defense then took over as the Rocks scored six straight to lead 43-29 with 2:14 left in the half. Trinity led by 16 at halftime, 50-34.
Trinity continues a tough five-day stretch of three games on Thursday when the Shamrocks travel to Scott County for the first time during the Mike Szabo era. The Shamrocks and Cardinals tipoff at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 8, 2011 in Georgetown, Kentucky. The Shamrocks end the three-game swing on Saturday in Pikeville against Rowan County.
Notes: Trinity opened the season with consecutive wins for the first time since 2008-2009 and the fourth time since 2004-2005… Trinity improved to 3-0 all-time against North Oldham including a 1-0 record when facing North Oldham in Prospect… Trinity wore the program’s new black Jordan Brand uniforms for the first time in a regular season game.
