Rocks Claim Third Title in Program History
LEXINGTON, Ky. – No. 1 Trinity held host Lexington Catholic to just 40 points on its way to a 58-40 win and its third Republic Bank Holiday Classic in program history.
Trinity won its sixth tournament title since the start of the 2004-2005 season among the state’s top three in-season tournaments, the King of the Bluegrass, Republic Bank Holiday Classic and Louisville Invitational Tournament. No other team has more than three.
Senior guard Charles Foster was named Most Valuable Player after scoring 15 points and grabbing four rebounds to lead the Shamrocks. Junior guard Darryl Hicks added 13 points.
The win moved the Shamrocks to 8-0 on the season against teams from the state of Kentucky, including three wins over teams ranked in the top 11 and five wins over teams in the top 25 of the Courier-Journal’s Preseason Coaches Rankings.
Trinity and Lexington Catholic met in the finals of the event for the second time in three years.
Trinity won the Republic Bank Holiday Classic Championship for the third time in program history, becoming just the second program to win three titles or more in the event. Host Lexington Catholic has won the event five times.
Trinity head coach Mike Szabo also tied former Lexington Catholic coach Danny Haney, one of the key individuals responsible for bringing Szabo to the state of Kentucky, with three tournament championships, the most by any coach.
Trinity returns to the court on Friday, Jan. 6, 2012 when it takes the court in Trinity’s Steinhauser Gymnasium for the first time this season as the Shamrocks host Newport Central Catholic at 7:30 p.m. Trinity played its first 12 games away from home to begin the season. It will be the final tune-up before the 2012 Louisville Invitational Tournament at Bellarmine. Pairings for the event will be released this weekend.
