No. 1 Trinity Advances in Louisville Invitational Tournament

Shamrocks in LIT Quarterfinals For Seventh Time in 11 Years

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – No. 1 Trinity advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2012 Republic Bank/Coca-Cola Louisville Invitational Tournament with a 73-34 win over 17 seed Beth Haven. 

The top seeded Shamrocks used first half runs of 8-0 (first quarter) and 21-0 (second quarter) to build a 19-point halftime lead. It was the second time this season that Trinity had put together a spurt of 20-0 or better. The Shamrocks put together a 32-0 run to take a 39-2 lead on Seneca in December.

The Shamrocks continued the scoring streaks in the third quarter with a 15-0 run over three minutes to start the second half, extending the 37-18 lead to 52-18.

Beth Haven and Trinity were meeting for the first time in program history. Beth Haven upset 16 seed Western 40-38 on Monday to set up the matchup with the Shamrocks.

13 of 14 players scored for the Shamrocks with no starter seeing more than 11 minutes of action.

Trinity head coach Mike Szabo, who led the Shamrocks to Louisville Invitational Tournament titles in 2005 and 2010, won his 15th career game in the tournament. He holds a 15-8 record overall in the event since coming to Trinity.

Trinity advances to face ninth seeded and defending champion Eastern in the quarterfinals of the 2012 Republic Bank/Coca-Cola Louisville Invitational Tournament on Friday, Jan. 13 at Bellarmine’s Knights Hall at 5:00 p.m. The teams last met in the event in the 2010 finals with Trinity posting a 50-45 win over the Eagles to claim their second Louisville Invitational Tournament title in program history.

The Shamrocks will appear in the quarterfinals of the event for the seventh time in 11 years. Trinity is making its 11th consecutive appearance in the Louisville Invitational Tournament, the second longest active streak behind Pleasure Ridge Park’s 21 consecutive appearances.
