Trinity rocks Central 85-62

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Playing its second game in two days, No. 1 Trinity topped new seventh region opponent Central 85-62 in the first meeting between the teams since 2005.

Trinity has now won 19 of the school’s last 20 games, including seven consecutive. The Shamrocks are 37-5 in their last 42 regular season games and are 65-12 against teams from the state of Kentucky over the last three years, including a 22-1 record in 2011-2012.

Rice finished the game with a career best 19 points. He hit five-of-five three-point field goal attempts in the game. The Shamrocks hit 11-of-20 from behind the arc as a team.

The Shamrocks got a spark off the bench early in the second quarter as Rice scored Trinity’s first ten points of the second quarter. Rice broke ties of 18-18 and 23-23 with three-point field goals as part of his second quarter scoring burst. With Trinity nursing a 38-33 lead late in the first half, Trinity scored the final five points of the first half and hit a three-pointer to open the second half to extend the lead to 46-33 with 6:25 left in the third quarter after a Troy Saxton three-pointer from the wing. The Yellow Jackets were unable to cut the lead to lower than seven the remainder of the game.

Trinity won its 15th consecutive regular season home game.

The Shamrocks had to overcome an early barrage of three-point field goals by the Yellow Jackets. Central hit six-of-ten from behind the arc in the first half, including four consecutive in the first quarter.

Trinity returns to action on Tuesday when the Shamrocks face Elizabethtown at Steinhauser Gymnasium. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. The Shamrocks are currently unbeaten at home this season, posting a 6-0 mark in the friendly confines of Steinhauser Gymnasium. The Shamrocks close out the regular season on Friday against Jeffersonville (IN) at 7:30 p.m. in Steinhauser Gymnasium.

Trinity is trying to complete its first undefeated season at home since the 2006-2007 season when the Rocks finished the year 9-0.
