Trinity rallies back to beat Ballard 58-55

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – No. 1 Trinity beat Ballard 58-55 in the semifinals of the 2012 Class Act 7th Region Tournament at Bellarmine to advance to the championship.

Kentucky Mr. Basketball candidate Nathan Dieudonne had a game high 21 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Shamrocks.

Trinity will face St. Xavier on Monday in the championship game at 7:00 p.m. at Knights Hall. Trinity beat St. Xavier 63-45 on Jan. 20, 2012 at Freedom Hall. Trinity and St. Xavier have not met in the regional finals before, but last met in the regional tournament in 2001.

Trinity advanced to the regional finals for the sixth time in program history with the win. Trinity is 1-4 all-time in the regional finals, posting a 66-56 win over Male in 2004 for the school’s first regional crown.

Trinity trailed by 12 points at 47-35 after a Quentin Snider three-pointer with 7:48 remaining before a 10-1 run brought the Shamrocks back within 48-45 after a Dieudonne basket with 4:18 left. The Shamrocks regained the lead at 52-51 on a Dieudonne basket and extended the lead to three on three occasions at 54-51, 56-53 and 58-55.

Dieudonne’s free throws in the final seconds sealed the victory.

The Shamrocks won their 30th game of the season, giving Trinity its first 30-win season in program history. It bested the school’s previous record of 29 that came in 2004-2005 when Trinity enjoyed one of the school’s finest seasons in a 29-4 campaign.

Trinity posted its 13th consecutive win, the second longest streak in program history, and have won 25 of their last 26 games. Trinity is now 27-1 against teams from the state of Kentucky this season.
