Seniors, Defense have Bears rolling

2011 has been an exciting year for high school football fans across the Commonwealth of Kentucky, but maybe no more exciting than in Louisville. Trinity has climbed to the top of national polls, the Central Yellowjackets are vying for their fourth state championship in five years, and upstart Collins is one game away from reaching their first state championship game. Teams across the metro are stockpiling talent and becoming more competitive in football, a welcoming sight to these eyes. But no team in Louisville has made bigger strides than the Butler Bears.
In his second stint as head coach, Scott Carmony has led Butler to an 11-2 record and a date with nationally ranked Trinity, Friday night. A win would send the Bears to Bowling Green, seeking their 3rd state championship in school history, but first since 1972. Carmony credits Butler’s resurgence to his player’s commitment to improvement. “A much larger and dedicated senior class,” has been key to the Bears success in 2011.
Butler’s senior class features playmaking wide receiver Kiante Northington, who leads the team in receiving with 709 yards and 9 touchdowns. Running back’s Alonzo Brock and Brandon Berkley have carried the Butler offense this season scoring 21 and 12 touchdowns, respectively. Brock carried the ball 16 times for 97 yards and four touchdowns in the regional final versus Henderson County. “All three of them are four year guys, Alonzo and Kiante never come off the field. Brandon has stepped in and done a great job since our starting tailback went down against Male,” Carmony said.
Though Butler has found success on offense, their defense has been stout all season. Allowing only 10 points per game, Carmony says “our players really have bought into the physical nature of the game. We stress defense and our staff has done a great job.” Friday’s game against powerhouse Trinity will undoubtedly be the Bears toughest test yet, “defense is our key to winning, we will go out and do what has got us this far against Trinity.”
